Aphrodesiacs

Throughout the world and human history many things have been revered for their aphrodisiac qualities. Ancient romans worshiped the apple, Europeans the potato. From ancient civilizations to modern times it seems sexuality is instinctively an important part of being human, as natural as the foods and herbs around us. We can use herbal allies and other techniques to help us nourish and create healthy sexual energy. It is my belief that this passionate energy can help us blossom in all areas of our lives. We can channel this through creative projects, challenges, living an active life in our community. In this post we will explore ways to use herbs as aphrodesiacs.

When thinking of the desired outcome of an aphrodisiac we might think of things that would heighten our sensations or aid in pleasure. We can use herbs to nourish our bodies and sexual organs. They may aid us by increasing blood flow or helping us relax so we can relax enough to enjoy the experience. We can enhance their use through mindfulness and meditation to help us feel more alive and stay present in all of our senses.

Herbs can be used as aphrodisiacs in a number of ways, you can make teas, tonics, infusions or treats like cacao truffles, You could also make body care products, for example is rose massage oil or bath salts. Another way to use them to set the mood by making your home beautiful with bouquets or smell good with potpourri.

Here are some of my personal favorite herbs that have been traditionally used throughout the ages as aphrodisiacs. Most of them contain constituents such as polyphenols which are micronutrients with antioxidant properties. Obromine, which has been used by many to reduce anxiety and improve blood flow to your heart and brain which helps with sexual function. Some of these herbs contain phenylethylamine which is a natural chemical found in your brain l that is released when in love and when we orgasm, thus it’s amazing help in the love making area! All of these herbs have so many uses so here I will only highlight them for their love potion properties.

  1. Ashwaganda- Widely used in India, its use can be traced back over 3,000 years ago. it is an adaptogen, which means it helps the body normalize all aspects of healthy function in the face of stress. Our sexual functions can suffer from all the stress we put on our bodies and minds, ashwaganda is there to help! Many claim they have regained their desire for sex, their organ function and their ability to become aroused again when using this herb.

  1. Damiana- There are multiple scientific studies suggesting that this herb can be useful in the bedroom. Woman who have trouble climaxing have claimed more success while using this herb.

  1. Oats- Especially good for men, it has been shown to help with testosterone levels that can be helpful with libido and other sexual functions. This herb is highly nourishing and supportive of all bodily systems.

  2. Hawthrorne- Traditionally used to support heart health, this can be helpful in the bedroom by increasing healthy blood flow.

  3. Rose- Perhaps one of the most recognizable aphrodisiacs, the rose has been a symbol of love for centuries. From it's intoxicating smell to it's soft beauty & flavor this has been used to soften the hardest of hearts.

  4. Kava kava- Has been used to calm the nerves and relax to help be present in pleasure.

  5. Ginger- So much of sexual function is related to our circulation. Ginger has an extremely warming effect and has been used traditionally to help with just that.

  6. Fenugreek-has estrogen-like effects on the body, which may increase women’s sex drive and pleasure. Due to its estrogen-like properties, fenugreek has been found to help increase libido and lessen the effect of hot flashes and mood fluctuations that are common symptoms of menopause and PMS.

  7. Cacao- Scientists ascribe the aphrodisiac qualities of cacao to chemicals it contains. One, tryptophan, is a building block of serotonin, a brain chemical involved in sexual arousal. The other, phenylethylamine, a stimulant related to amphetamine, is released in the brain when people fall in love.

  8. Schizandra berry- Traditionally used in China to preserve youth and beauty, this has been known to increase stamina and endurance.

  9. Ginseng - Steming from a chinese word meaning "man root", it's been said that this herb likely works like Viagra in relaxing muscles and improving blood flow to the genital region.

  10. Ginko-Known for it's capacity to boost circulation and increase blood flow to all parts of the body.

Tasting dark chocolate,

A ripe apricot,

A luscious Shiraz

Your favorite elixir –

Savor the expanding joy in your body.

Nature is offering herself to you.

How astonishing

How astonishing

How astonishing

This world can taste so good.

So good.

Raise your glass,

Close your eyes,

Toast the universe.

The Sun and Moon and Earth danced together

To bring you this delight.

Receive the nectar on your tongue

As a kiss of the divine.
